Collection: Bill Matthews Art

About the Artist

Thirty years ago, Bill Matthews turned his lifelong passion for fishing into a full-time career. Over the past three decades, he has built a successful career in the fishing tackle industry, first as a National Sales Manager and later as the owner of his own manufacturers’ representative agency, Bill Matthews Outdoors. This journey has taken him to virtually every major fishery in the United States and provided opportunities to fish waters across the country.Along the way, Bill discovered gyotaku, the traditional Japanese art of fish printing, and was immediately captivated by its respectful, sustainable cycle of catch, print, and eat. The practice honors both the fish and the experience, creating a lasting record of a memorable catch while ensuring nothing goes to waste. A self-taught gyotaku artist, Bill is building a personal collection that celebrates the diverse fish species of the Pacific Northwest, using only fish he has personally caught. Each print tells a unique story from the water, capturing a moment in time while preserving the rich heritage and traditions of sportfishing for future generations.
